Healthy Food is a Viable Option

Friday, August 12th, 2011

The universal health awareness has led the people by being very watchful about what they eat, and the search for healthier alternatives is never ending. There is sufficient reason for this concern with health. It is the knowledge that blood pressure, cholesterol, obesity and other life shortening diseases have now a firm grip on a large proportion of the population. Also the realization that your health is governed by what you eat.

A number of the more popular food chains and restaurant are now aware that their clients are a little more discriminatory of the food they eat, and have adapted their products and menus to include healthier options. Even fast food joints and ice cream parlors are not immune to this new trend of having to cater to discerning clientele.

Choose Healthy Food

The best options in this are to choose fruits and vegetables. Increase your consumption of these two items and take advantage of the fact that they are high in fiber and will almost certainly reduce the blood cholesterol in your body. One does need a certain amount of fiber in our daily diet, but it is better to increase the quantity gradually. Also, let the body adjust to any increase in fiber content.

Buy your meat and chicken without the skin. Eat only the white meat from the chicken and get its health benefits. Cook your meat slowly so that it is tender and full of juices. It will also retain the flavor and the nutrients if cooked this way. Look for alternative sources of protein like peas, nuts and beans.

Snacking is a sure way of upsetting your control over your food intake. If you have to indulge yourself avoid desserts in the form of cakes and pies. Keep away from muffins, doughnuts and cookies, and anything that contains refined sugar. Assuage your hunger pangs with fruit or for that matter, with mashed potatoes.

Use Healthy Oils in your Cooking

Oils that are used in cooking can contribute a lot to your health or lack of it. There was a time when the choice of cooking oils was very restricted and you just grabbed whatever was there on the supermarket shelf. The awareness and wide variety of oils now available have given you better alternatives. Know the difference between olive oil, flax seed oil, sunflower oil and canola oil and how further different they are from palm oil, coconut oil, vegetable oils and butter. You can of course go the whole hog and completely eliminate the use of oil to cook your food. There are other more innovative methods that can be used.

Crock Pot cooking ensures that the food nutrients stay in the food by the technique of even heat distribution and a style of constant heating. The final product from the Crock Pot has its flavors and nutrients intact and is therefore healthier.

This new technique of slow cooking has led to a large amount of recipes for this method of cooking, being circulated. They could be for roasted pork, mouth watering desserts and even basic pasta. Even baby food recipes abound. If your Crock Pot lets you prepare your baby’s food in your own kitchen, you can stop worrying about the negative aspects of commercial baby food.

Let others look on it as a fad, but your healthy diet is for you to follow and the benefits would accrue only to you. It may take a little time to get used to this change in your lifestyle, but these adjustment problems are temporary and transient. Time will let you adjust to these changes.

Losing Weight and Keeping it Off

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

Many people have their problems on maintaining constancy in their weight. It either goes up or comes down in erratic cycles. Your social life could be a good contributor to this state of affairs, by keeping you in the whirl of parties and family events. The good things that are there on the dining tables at such occasions, especially during the holiday season are bound to make you gain some weight. You could also be eating unhealthy food due to some emotional stress in your life.  You need to start developing habits that can manage your weight better and take control of your body. The end effect would be to make you look and feel better.

Three ways to lose weight and keep it from coming back are listed below.

1. Diet together with exercise.
Combine better nutrition and an activity regime that is over and above your normal routine. You are almost certain to lose weight. These must become a part of your daily routine in tandem and never be separated. A starvation diet is sheer foolishness. Better that you cut out the unnecessary calories, be prudent when you fill your plate and see that you eat more nutritious food.

Even your exercise routine should build up gradually to the required level. You have been leading a fairly sedentary life, so let your body get used to any activity in stages. To begin with start with a walk of 15 to 20 minutes every day. Gradually see that you walk at a faster pace and cover some extra distance in the same time. Just for these 20 minutes of exercise it will cause a change in your body’s metabolic rate and you will burn more calories even when you are just resting. If you are already an active daily walker, let the start of your weight loss program encourage you to walk just a little bit faster or a little bit longer, maybe 10 percent, would do fine for a start.

2. It is more important to lose inches from your waist.
Fat does not weigh as much as muscle. Do not lose muscle. Gaining some muscle will increase your metabolism, hence burn those calories by increasing your muscle mass. Set your goals of losing those inches. What is the waist measurement that you need to fit into those old jeans? Once you are focused on these goals increase your exercise activity and reduce your calorie intake. The fat will go but your muscles may increase their mass. Your weight may not go down by much and the weighing scale may seem to be stuck, but you will look better and feel much better.

3. Find someone to share it with.
You do not have to join a club or social group to do this. Share your thinking on your diet and what you want to achieve with your friend or someone in the family. If they are in the same situation and are looking also to lose those inches, it will be ideal. Maybe you will find a group online that will help you be positive about your diet and exercise regime. It is not a bad thing to write down your target weights and when you hope to achieve them. Sharing this with a friend or support group would bolster you when you get a set back and may also get you some useful tips to prevent the backsliding. You need to be committed at all times to eat and exercise yourself to a healthy body.

Do not look to set your ideal weight from tables in a health magazines or internet site. The weight that is best for you is the one that you are most comfortable with. Be proud of your body and the way you look. That is the only way to good health.

Seven Reasons to Lose Weight Now

Sunday, July 10th, 2011

Today, everyone seems obsessed with maintaining the ideal body weight in order to look good and keep up with the competitive world.  But maintaining your ideal weight goes far beyond looking good.  It has several important health benefits that you need to take into serious consideration.  Obesity or excessive weight is one of the leading factors that are indirectly attributed to death.  Of course, perhaps no one has ever died from being fat alone but excess weight can cause a horde of other ailments that can be life threatening.

Getting in shape and fighting obesity is a wise and good move you can make now to lead better and higher quality of life.  If you still feel that losing weight is too much of a hassle, let’s look at seven reasons why you should start losing weight now.

Reason #1:  Diabetes
Almost ninety percent of those suffering from Type II diabetes are overweight.  Diabetes is a real danger and currently ranks as the third killer of women and men in the United States.  It also causes adult blindness.  Diabetes can be the result of eating the wrong types of food.  Foods that possesses high glycemic index such as cakes, processed flour and cookies will cause your body to increase the level of glucose in the body.  This causes the body to be in high glucose states which makes losing weight very difficult to achieve.

Reason #2: Stroke
Being in an obese state can cause arteriosclerosis to occur, which is the result of fatty deposits building in the arterial walls throughout your body.  This causes the path where the blood is flowing becomes small and increases blood clotting.  When the blood clots happen in the brain, it blocks the supply of blood to the tiny microscopic capillaries which can result in stroke.

Reason #3 Cancer
Obese people are more likely to get cancer.  Even though only 33% of people diagnosed with cancer are actually overweight, there is medical evidence that being obese do promote a condition that actually encourages cancerous cells to grow.  Physical inactivity and body fat promote a high level of insulin and excess estrogen.  Both of these elements actually promote accelerative cell division.  The faster those cells divide the higher the risk of getting cancer!

Reason #4: Respiratory problems
Obesity causes the lungs to appear “smaller’ and makes breathing difficult and laborious.  One condition that is common to overweight people is sleep apnea.  When sleep apnea occurs, an individual actually stops breathing for a few moments.  There is a soft tissue that collapses and prevents the airway from working normally.

Reason #5: Urinary Incontinence
This condition occurs when the body is incapable of controlling the release of urine.  Urinary incontinence is caused by a heavy abdomen exerting pressure on the valve of urinary bladder which causes one to lose control.  The extra weight then puts extra pressure on the urinary bladder thus causing more complications that will lead to the condition known as urinary incontinence.

Reason #7: High Blood Pressure
One third of the high blood pressure cases are linked to obesity.  Generally, Body Mass Index and the age are two important factors that cause high blood pressure to occur in a person.  Losing weight will go a long way to reduce there risk of developing one, or reduce the risk of a more dangerous condition or events such as stroke if you already have high blood pressure.

It is a good idea, no matter where you are in life, to start a food weight loss program if you are overweight.  Do not wait for a catastrophe to occur before you start taking action.
If you are few pounds overweight or if you are very overweight, then please take action right now and start losing that excess weight before catastrophe strikes.  Losing weight may not such a difficult task after all, if you have access to the right information and doing it the right way.  You can talk to your doctor to find out the best way to lose weight safely and effectively without jeopardizing your health.  It can be fun, motivating and provides tremendous benefits in terms of a renewed sense of self confidence and better health and quality of life.

Healthy Dieting For Weight Loss

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

Apart from exercises and lifestyle modification, there is another way of achieving weight loss – through dieting. Now dieting is of two types – healthy and unhealthy dieting.

Let me first explain what an unhealthy diet consists of and how it may affect your body. Then you will find it easier to understand the concept of healthy dieting and why you should always opt for this.

Fad diets

Yes, the other name of unhealthy diets is fad diets or vice versa. By fad diets I mean Atkins Diet, South Beach Diet, Raw Food Diet, The Zone, General Motors Diet, Cabbage Soup Diet, Detox Diet, and Miami Diet, 3 Day Diet, 5 Day Diet, 7 Day Diet and the likes.

The list is pretty long and increasing in length because every other day some celebrity or other is coming up with her own dietary concoctions and eating up the heads of impressionable girls and young women who wish to become impossibly thin.

These diets are harmful for the body and doctors and nutritionists always advise against following these diets because they create imbalance in the body by eliminating whole food groups altogether and often result in malnourishment.

These diets make you starve, feel lethargic and fatigued till you drop off into those infamous fainting fits made famous by models and movie stars. Things can take a more serious turn and you may land up in the hospital for all you know!

Healthy dieting for weight loss

You have to replace those 3 huge meals with 5 smaller meals every day, leaving sufficient gap between each.

Supper should be taken by 8 p.m. If you feel hungry by the time it is 10.30 or 11 in the night, munch on Acai berries or guava or apple but certainly not on potato chips.

Red meat, butter, clarified butter, oily spicy gravy laden calorie laced food, aerated drinks, cakes, pastries, deep fried food items, French fries, potato sticks, fritters, chocolates, ice creams, cookies, sweets, junk food and every kind of unrefined sugar and empty calories have to be banned from your life along with alcohol.

Instead start drinking warm water, lime juice, fresh fruit juice, Acai berry juice, herbal green tea, coconut water, etc on a regular basis. You should increase your fluid intake to more than 14 glasses per day.

It is a myth that honey can make you stay slim. Rather it adds to calories. Drink only a big glass of warm water mixed with a dash of lime juice; first thing in the morning to help flush out toxins and to keep constipation at bay.

Water also acts as appetite suppressant. But let me debunk the myth that cold water can add to your calories. It doesn’t. But artificial beverages and carton packed fruit beverages can do this.

Next in line is the inclusion of fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables, olive oil, vitamin C enriched vegetables and fruits, whole wheat products, lean meat, white meat, fish etc in your diet along with lentils, legumes, beans, ladies finger, cabbage etc.

5 Mistakes to Avoid When Trying to Lose Weight

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

Some people are so desperate to lose weight that they cling on to every piece of information they know which they believe can help them reach their goals.  Some weight loss fanatics are so into their weight loss program that they tend to give out ineffective advice that actually sabotages a person’s weight loss efforts.  Here are five of the most common mistakes dieters tend to make when trying to lose weight.

Skipping Breakfast
Don’t we all want to start the day feeling like we have achieving something?  Well, you can satisfy this by starting an early morning exercise program or a meditation ritual.  But do not ever make the mistake of skipping breakfast.  This is a big mistake and may cost you your success in achieving your weight loss goals.

When you leave the house feeling hungry and deprived, there is a high chance of you binging over your lunch or worse, reaching out for some unhealthy snacks during office hours.  Perhaps a bar of chocolate will keep your mind running active and the creative juices flowing.  But this little act is disastrous to your weight loss goals.

Starvation Diet
No, sorry.  This one is not going to work either.  You do not want to starve yourself as your body will go into an emergency state that causes your metabolism to go haywire.  When it thinks that you are starving it, it will try to protect itself from the perceived possible future famine.  The body will cling desperately to all storage of fat and learn to adapt to the condition by burning less fat.  This is exactly what every weight loss experts dread.  In this state, you will lose very little weight, even when you are eating less and less food during the day.

Binging Diet Foods
Some weight loss companies do provide diet food that claim to have lower amounts of sugar and fat.  They are specially prepared to help you lose weight.  Or so are they?  Even if these prepare diet food come with lower fat and sugar, it won’t do you any food if you binge on them.  For instance, if the usual burger comes with 50 grams of fat, and your new ”diet” food comes with only half of that amount, what good would it do if you are eating double of what you are supposed to?

So in the end you will be spending money on those expensive specially prepared meals and not getting the results you want.

Salad Meals
Who can live on salad alone?  Not me!  We all need a variety of healthy, delicious meal that we can enjoy day to day without feelings of deprivation and loss.  So it is far better for you to select a good well-balanced meal instead of opting for salad everyday, it will keep you on the program a whole lot longer.

Spend Money
You do not need to spend excessive amounts of money to lose weight.  Most people believe that some amount of investment has to be made to purchase all those fancy weight loss peripherals, but effective weight loss do not need financial investment all the time.  If you are keen to lose weight, you can always surf the Internet.  There are plenty of free programs you can try; with a little bit of determination it will help you lose the weight you want.

It is easy to fall victim into these simple weight loss trap when you are extremely anxious to lose weight.  There you have four most common mistakes dieters tend to make when trying to lose weight.  Just be wary and do not fall into the mistake of doing them.

All About Low Carb Dieting

Monday, December 1st, 2008

Low carb dieting is just what it sounds – a diet whose specialty is low carbohydrates content and it is also known by other names such as low glycemic diet or controlled carbohydrate diet or reduced carbohydrate diet.

Low carb dieting is a rather broad term that encompasses various kinds of flexible eating plans and formats as well as popular fad diets like Carbohydrate Addicts Diet, Sugar Busters Diet, Protein Power Diet, The Zone, South Beach Diet and Atkins diet.

The main thing that these diets preach is to restrict the consumption of carbohydrate laden food items or eliminate carbohydrates from your diet as much as possible.

A few of these diets will banish carbohydrates in all its various forms while some others will reduce or eliminate the intake of food groups which are high in carbs such as sugars and starch. Other low carb diets will concentrate on the glycemic content.

There is one low carb diet that has attained a lot of popularity nowadays which eliminates all kinds of white colored foods such as potatoes, white rice, white flour and sugars. It goes by the name of No White Foods diet.

Each and every of these low carb diets has an induction phase – a phase marked by very little or negligible consumption of carbohydrate. Most people who are up in arms against low carb diets and believe that they eliminate whole food groups together and lead to imbalance in the body and result in loss of nutrition and malnourishment, get confused between this low carb induction phase and a low carb diet.

To put your doubts to rest, though there is this induction period it lasts for a very short period and is followed by the intake of more carbohydrates later on.
A few of these low carb diets start off with comparatively high levels of carbs, but in spite of that cannot match up to the standard set down by USDA Food Pyramid.

Mainstream diets recommend an eating plan with the carb content pegged at 50% to 65%. Taking it to be the yardstick, a low carb diet may contain a carb count of 40% or even lesser. But this is not the official way to measure the carb count in diets.

Advantages of low carb dieting

Each and every individual won’t experience all of the many benefits of low carb dieting. The advantages and benefits experienced by individuals following this diet will vary from one person to another.

Some of the proven and widely demonstrated benefits of low carb dieting are reduced blood insulin level, decreased blood pressure, improved insulin sensitivity, an increase in good cholesterol or HDL, a reduction in blood glucose levels in pre diabetic and diabetic patients, improved levels of triglycerides and significant weight loss in spite of not limiting calories. Not much muscle mass loss is reported.

At times seizure disorders are treated through Ketogenic diets.

Weight Loss Plan Considerations

Monday, December 1st, 2008

There are various things to consider when choosing the right weight loss plan for all plans aren’t good, many are worthless and even if they are good they might not suit you. Obesity has assumed mammoth proportions in the developed world and in direct proportion to this increase, has been the increase in weight loss plans and programs that have flooded the market.

Everybody is trying to cash in on the weight loss craze and the weight loss industry has ballooned into a multi-billion dollar generating industry where many companies are out to make a killing. Naturally all the products that are sold or advertised are not effective and there are few which can damage your body.

Factors for choosing the right weight loss plan

While choosing the right weight loss plan, you have to check to see if it takes into account your personality type, your lifestyle, your body type, whether it addresses emotional eating or not and helps you lose weight consistently, whether it helps you to achieve your dietary goals in a healthy manner or not and other such things.

Healthy balanced weight loss plan

It is very important to select a healthy balanced weight loss plan that will make you fight the fat through proper suitable exercise regularly and through a diet that doesn’t make you starve but makes you eat more of nutritious food, while urging you to abstain from junk food and unhealthy food habits.

It will try to alter your unhealthy lifestyle habits and make you eat fresh green vegetables, lots of fruits, fibrous food groups, low fat food cooked in olive oil, lean meat, lean, protein etc

You will have to abstain from red meat, alcohol, oily buttery food and junk items.
Beware of weight loss plans that promise to transform you from a lump of lard to a shapely hot bod with washboard abs in 1 week flat. They are simply taking you for a merry ride at the expense of your health.

Stay away from fad diets that make you starve or promise miracles in 48 hours. Effective weight loss that will be long lasting cannot be achieved through miracles. It has to be painstakingly achieved through hard work and sweat and abstinence.

Fad diets will lead to malnourishment and fainting fits and ultimately you will land up in a hospital bed.

Doctor recommended weight loss plan

Your doctor in conjunction with a nutritionist/dietician and fitness instructor is the best person to tell you what kind of weight loss plan will suit you the most. He himself will chart out a proper plan for you incorporating all the factors given above.

Unless you select a weight loss plan that suits your personality, body type and lifestyle, it won’t show results and there is the possibility that your body will get accustomed to the patterned weight loss and hit that dreaded plateau.
