Healthy Food is a Viable Option

Friday, August 12th, 2011

The universal health awareness has led the people by being very watchful about what they eat, and the search for healthier alternatives is never ending. There is sufficient reason for this concern with health. It is the knowledge that blood pressure, cholesterol, obesity and other life shortening diseases have now a firm grip on a large proportion of the population. Also the realization that your health is governed by what you eat.

A number of the more popular food chains and restaurant are now aware that their clients are a little more discriminatory of the food they eat, and have adapted their products and menus to include healthier options. Even fast food joints and ice cream parlors are not immune to this new trend of having to cater to discerning clientele.

Choose Healthy Food

The best options in this are to choose fruits and vegetables. Increase your consumption of these two items and take advantage of the fact that they are high in fiber and will almost certainly reduce the blood cholesterol in your body. One does need a certain amount of fiber in our daily diet, but it is better to increase the quantity gradually. Also, let the body adjust to any increase in fiber content.

Buy your meat and chicken without the skin. Eat only the white meat from the chicken and get its health benefits. Cook your meat slowly so that it is tender and full of juices. It will also retain the flavor and the nutrients if cooked this way. Look for alternative sources of protein like peas, nuts and beans.

Snacking is a sure way of upsetting your control over your food intake. If you have to indulge yourself avoid desserts in the form of cakes and pies. Keep away from muffins, doughnuts and cookies, and anything that contains refined sugar. Assuage your hunger pangs with fruit or for that matter, with mashed potatoes.

Use Healthy Oils in your Cooking

Oils that are used in cooking can contribute a lot to your health or lack of it. There was a time when the choice of cooking oils was very restricted and you just grabbed whatever was there on the supermarket shelf. The awareness and wide variety of oils now available have given you better alternatives. Know the difference between olive oil, flax seed oil, sunflower oil and canola oil and how further different they are from palm oil, coconut oil, vegetable oils and butter. You can of course go the whole hog and completely eliminate the use of oil to cook your food. There are other more innovative methods that can be used.

Crock Pot cooking ensures that the food nutrients stay in the food by the technique of even heat distribution and a style of constant heating. The final product from the Crock Pot has its flavors and nutrients intact and is therefore healthier.

This new technique of slow cooking has led to a large amount of recipes for this method of cooking, being circulated. They could be for roasted pork, mouth watering desserts and even basic pasta. Even baby food recipes abound. If your Crock Pot lets you prepare your baby’s food in your own kitchen, you can stop worrying about the negative aspects of commercial baby food.

Let others look on it as a fad, but your healthy diet is for you to follow and the benefits would accrue only to you. It may take a little time to get used to this change in your lifestyle, but these adjustment problems are temporary and transient. Time will let you adjust to these changes.

Losing Weight and Keeping it Off

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

Many people have their problems on maintaining constancy in their weight. It either goes up or comes down in erratic cycles. Your social life could be a good contributor to this state of affairs, by keeping you in the whirl of parties and family events. The good things that are there on the dining tables at such occasions, especially during the holiday season are bound to make you gain some weight. You could also be eating unhealthy food due to some emotional stress in your life.  You need to start developing habits that can manage your weight better and take control of your body. The end effect would be to make you look and feel better.

Three ways to lose weight and keep it from coming back are listed below.

1. Diet together with exercise.
Combine better nutrition and an activity regime that is over and above your normal routine. You are almost certain to lose weight. These must become a part of your daily routine in tandem and never be separated. A starvation diet is sheer foolishness. Better that you cut out the unnecessary calories, be prudent when you fill your plate and see that you eat more nutritious food.

Even your exercise routine should build up gradually to the required level. You have been leading a fairly sedentary life, so let your body get used to any activity in stages. To begin with start with a walk of 15 to 20 minutes every day. Gradually see that you walk at a faster pace and cover some extra distance in the same time. Just for these 20 minutes of exercise it will cause a change in your body’s metabolic rate and you will burn more calories even when you are just resting. If you are already an active daily walker, let the start of your weight loss program encourage you to walk just a little bit faster or a little bit longer, maybe 10 percent, would do fine for a start.

2. It is more important to lose inches from your waist.
Fat does not weigh as much as muscle. Do not lose muscle. Gaining some muscle will increase your metabolism, hence burn those calories by increasing your muscle mass. Set your goals of losing those inches. What is the waist measurement that you need to fit into those old jeans? Once you are focused on these goals increase your exercise activity and reduce your calorie intake. The fat will go but your muscles may increase their mass. Your weight may not go down by much and the weighing scale may seem to be stuck, but you will look better and feel much better.

3. Find someone to share it with.
You do not have to join a club or social group to do this. Share your thinking on your diet and what you want to achieve with your friend or someone in the family. If they are in the same situation and are looking also to lose those inches, it will be ideal. Maybe you will find a group online that will help you be positive about your diet and exercise regime. It is not a bad thing to write down your target weights and when you hope to achieve them. Sharing this with a friend or support group would bolster you when you get a set back and may also get you some useful tips to prevent the backsliding. You need to be committed at all times to eat and exercise yourself to a healthy body.

Do not look to set your ideal weight from tables in a health magazines or internet site. The weight that is best for you is the one that you are most comfortable with. Be proud of your body and the way you look. That is the only way to good health.

Seven Reasons to Lose Weight Now

Sunday, July 10th, 2011

Today, everyone seems obsessed with maintaining the ideal body weight in order to look good and keep up with the competitive world.  But maintaining your ideal weight goes far beyond looking good.  It has several important health benefits that you need to take into serious consideration.  Obesity or excessive weight is one of the leading factors that are indirectly attributed to death.  Of course, perhaps no one has ever died from being fat alone but excess weight can cause a horde of other ailments that can be life threatening.

Getting in shape and fighting obesity is a wise and good move you can make now to lead better and higher quality of life.  If you still feel that losing weight is too much of a hassle, let’s look at seven reasons why you should start losing weight now.

Reason #1:  Diabetes
Almost ninety percent of those suffering from Type II diabetes are overweight.  Diabetes is a real danger and currently ranks as the third killer of women and men in the United States.  It also causes adult blindness.  Diabetes can be the result of eating the wrong types of food.  Foods that possesses high glycemic index such as cakes, processed flour and cookies will cause your body to increase the level of glucose in the body.  This causes the body to be in high glucose states which makes losing weight very difficult to achieve.

Reason #2: Stroke
Being in an obese state can cause arteriosclerosis to occur, which is the result of fatty deposits building in the arterial walls throughout your body.  This causes the path where the blood is flowing becomes small and increases blood clotting.  When the blood clots happen in the brain, it blocks the supply of blood to the tiny microscopic capillaries which can result in stroke.

Reason #3 Cancer
Obese people are more likely to get cancer.  Even though only 33% of people diagnosed with cancer are actually overweight, there is medical evidence that being obese do promote a condition that actually encourages cancerous cells to grow.  Physical inactivity and body fat promote a high level of insulin and excess estrogen.  Both of these elements actually promote accelerative cell division.  The faster those cells divide the higher the risk of getting cancer!

Reason #4: Respiratory problems
Obesity causes the lungs to appear “smaller’ and makes breathing difficult and laborious.  One condition that is common to overweight people is sleep apnea.  When sleep apnea occurs, an individual actually stops breathing for a few moments.  There is a soft tissue that collapses and prevents the airway from working normally.

Reason #5: Urinary Incontinence
This condition occurs when the body is incapable of controlling the release of urine.  Urinary incontinence is caused by a heavy abdomen exerting pressure on the valve of urinary bladder which causes one to lose control.  The extra weight then puts extra pressure on the urinary bladder thus causing more complications that will lead to the condition known as urinary incontinence.

Reason #7: High Blood Pressure
One third of the high blood pressure cases are linked to obesity.  Generally, Body Mass Index and the age are two important factors that cause high blood pressure to occur in a person.  Losing weight will go a long way to reduce there risk of developing one, or reduce the risk of a more dangerous condition or events such as stroke if you already have high blood pressure.

It is a good idea, no matter where you are in life, to start a food weight loss program if you are overweight.  Do not wait for a catastrophe to occur before you start taking action.
If you are few pounds overweight or if you are very overweight, then please take action right now and start losing that excess weight before catastrophe strikes.  Losing weight may not such a difficult task after all, if you have access to the right information and doing it the right way.  You can talk to your doctor to find out the best way to lose weight safely and effectively without jeopardizing your health.  It can be fun, motivating and provides tremendous benefits in terms of a renewed sense of self confidence and better health and quality of life.

The Proper Way of Muscle Building

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Proper methods for training in muscle building are as important as the goal of building muscle. This is a sacred tenet of bodybuilding. Many people want to build up their bodies so that they can look good, but fail miserably by making the mistake of trying to achieve this in the wrong ways. They will also have spent a lot of money before they realize their errors. See if you can start your quest for a better body with a plan laid down by some professional trainer and follow his guidance. If you want to train and develop your muscles on your own, you also need to keep in mind of the important points.

Your weekly schedule

When a new body builder begins, he generally has a high motivation factor and may work out every day. The result of this is quite often intense soreness and no new muscle. Your body needs rest between workouts to let it recover and have the time to develop new muscles. Start your regime with a workout and two days of rest to let your body’s soreness reduce. After that follow a regime of three workouts per week and do not lose patience.

Different Techniques have different results

Three basic types of exercises will help you in your muscle building training:

- Muscle building using free weights
- Muscle building using machines
- Compound exercises for muscle building

Bodybuilders do not have unanimity on the effectiveness for each of these exercises to build the desired muscles in a period of time and that is not too long. What is definite however is that each of them will have to be employed to build larger muscles?

See that you do not put on fat

No muscle training is complete without a proper diet in place. Muscle mass can only increase if your body has the right nutritious food in adequate quantities. If you do not want to put on weight, but actually want to lose a few pounds, just be really careful when you plan your diet. Be a little choosy about the food you eat and decide the extra food that you need to consume to make up for the calories lost in the workouts. Getting the right balance is important. This can be achieved by a little detailed planning.

Muscle imbalance is not good

A common mistake made by those who are new to muscle building training is on working on one group of muscles, like the arms, legs or abdomen, and give the other muscle groups the go by. This is wrong. All muscle groups should be worked on equally. This will give you a well sculpted body with an overall look, which was after all your aim when you started muscle building training.

Do not exercise your mind along with your muscles

Keep your mind blank when you work out. Leave your preoccupations at home or in the locker and concentrate completely on working out. Do not let any distractions take you away from the intensity of the exercises. Breathe properly and evenly and do not think of anything else.

These are just a few pointers to ensure that your regimen of training for building your muscles achieves what it is in place for. Monitor your progress at regular intervals and you may be surprised with the progress in muscle building that you have achieved since the last time.

Healthy Dieting For Weight Loss

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

Apart from exercises and lifestyle modification, there is another way of achieving weight loss – through dieting. Now dieting is of two types – healthy and unhealthy dieting.

Let me first explain what an unhealthy diet consists of and how it may affect your body. Then you will find it easier to understand the concept of healthy dieting and why you should always opt for this.

Fad diets

Yes, the other name of unhealthy diets is fad diets or vice versa. By fad diets I mean Atkins Diet, South Beach Diet, Raw Food Diet, The Zone, General Motors Diet, Cabbage Soup Diet, Detox Diet, and Miami Diet, 3 Day Diet, 5 Day Diet, 7 Day Diet and the likes.

The list is pretty long and increasing in length because every other day some celebrity or other is coming up with her own dietary concoctions and eating up the heads of impressionable girls and young women who wish to become impossibly thin.

These diets are harmful for the body and doctors and nutritionists always advise against following these diets because they create imbalance in the body by eliminating whole food groups altogether and often result in malnourishment.

These diets make you starve, feel lethargic and fatigued till you drop off into those infamous fainting fits made famous by models and movie stars. Things can take a more serious turn and you may land up in the hospital for all you know!

Healthy dieting for weight loss

You have to replace those 3 huge meals with 5 smaller meals every day, leaving sufficient gap between each.

Supper should be taken by 8 p.m. If you feel hungry by the time it is 10.30 or 11 in the night, munch on Acai berries or guava or apple but certainly not on potato chips.

Red meat, butter, clarified butter, oily spicy gravy laden calorie laced food, aerated drinks, cakes, pastries, deep fried food items, French fries, potato sticks, fritters, chocolates, ice creams, cookies, sweets, junk food and every kind of unrefined sugar and empty calories have to be banned from your life along with alcohol.

Instead start drinking warm water, lime juice, fresh fruit juice, Acai berry juice, herbal green tea, coconut water, etc on a regular basis. You should increase your fluid intake to more than 14 glasses per day.

It is a myth that honey can make you stay slim. Rather it adds to calories. Drink only a big glass of warm water mixed with a dash of lime juice; first thing in the morning to help flush out toxins and to keep constipation at bay.

Water also acts as appetite suppressant. But let me debunk the myth that cold water can add to your calories. It doesn’t. But artificial beverages and carton packed fruit beverages can do this.

Next in line is the inclusion of fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables, olive oil, vitamin C enriched vegetables and fruits, whole wheat products, lean meat, white meat, fish etc in your diet along with lentils, legumes, beans, ladies finger, cabbage etc.

What is a Negative Calorie Diet?

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

There is no person on this planet that does not want to feel comfortable with their appearance and their body. Women would like their bodies to be sexy and men would prefer to look manly. There are some people who are blessed with metabolisms that automatically keep their body in shape, though the vast majority needs a rigid diet and exercise routines to achieve the desired looks. The diet that you follow can be from among the vast number available and should suit your personal needs.

The negative calorie diet is one such diet that has taken a firm hold in the minds of people. Its main contention is that certain foods create calorie effects that are negative and thus translate into a weight loss. This contention is a matter of controversy, as scientists feel that there are no such foods that have negative calories, and that the theory is scientifically unproven. The proponents however are adamant that you can eat your way to a weight loss. Their theory is that the body requires energy to digest food. You need however a good metabolism to burn fat. The popularity of the negative calorie diet stems from the fact that it needs little or no effort propagates the consumption of vitamin and mineral rich foods and increases the metabolism of the body, enabling it to burn more calories.

Asparagus, pineapple, carrots, strawberry, papaya, watermelon and grapefruit are said to contain negative calories. They have enough vitamins and minerals which breakdown their own calories and also those present in the digestive system. In the negative calorie diet you are required to eat these foods in a natural state, without addition of butter or sugar that can add to the calories and also avoid any form of cooking. This diet is completely restricted to consuming vast quantities of fruits and vegetables found suitable, and will be quite a strain if you are addicted to meat, pasta etc.

You can also stay healthy by adapting the Natural Colon Cleanse method. The colon affects other body organs by its functioning. If you eat or consume food that has many toxins this could cause the colon to be overworked. Pollution also forces our colon to work harder to remove the chemicals that have entered our body, causing the immune system to work harder. The Natural Colon Cleanse method is said to be a safe method to treat our health imbalances. It is a method suggested for people with constipation and is also recommended for those who want to strengthen their internal organs.

The elimination of unhealthy toxins which result from pollution or a wrong diet is possible with Natural Colon Cleanse. It can improve the efficiency of your digestive system, reduce the constipation, remove harmful toxins from the colon, strengthen your immunity, and help to eliminate waste material from the body, improve your mental clarity and concentration and detoxify the chemicals that get into our body. It is said to be a good way of caring for ourselves and improving our health. But it is said that it could slow up the metabolism and reduce its ability to burn fat.

The negative calorie diet has one positive side. The fruits and vegetables that you eat cannot hurt you in any way as they are healthy additions to your intake.

Sonoma Diet

Friday, April 24th, 2009

The Sonoma diet is actually one of the easiest diets to follow because it doe not require any formulas to be used in order to calculate the amount of food that you should eat and there is no need to count he amount of calories that you are eating. The diet uses bowl sizes in order to help you consume the correct amount of foods in order so that you care able to lose weight. With the Sonoma diet there is more emphasis is placed on telling you what you are able to eat instead of what you are not allowed to eat so this is another advantage of this diet. The diet also tries to teach people to enjoy their food and what they are eating instead of seeing it as something that have to do. This diet requires you to eat you r food at a slower pace and this means that you are able to savour every mouthful.

The Sonoma diet requires you to follow a strict regime for the first ten days of the diet and only eat certain foods and then after this you are able to enjoy just about any foods that you wish and some of the recipes that are recommended by this diet also include some of the finest wines and this will make the foods more enjoyable which means that you do not view the diet as a chore.

The diet contains very strong nutritional components, which means that you do not have to end up starving yourself like you do with a lot of other diets. The nutritional elements that are included in this diet will help you to remain healthy and they keep your metabolic system working at levels, which are very effective.  It is important to remember that the better your metabolic system is working the faster you will be able to burn off the unwanted fat that you have.

This diet is actually very popular for many different reasons including the fact that you are able to eat most foods that you like and it is actually quite an effective weight loss program.  It is important to remember that not all diets are right for everyone so you may have to try a few diets before you find the right one for you and your metabolic system.

This diet works by limiting the quantity of food that you can have as opposed to the type of foods that you can have. Some dieters find this a hard diet to stick to because they have to be quite strict and stick to the portion sizes. On average a woman needs to consume between nine hundred and fifty and one thousand one hundred calories and the average man needs to consume between one thousand and fifty and one thousand three hundred however if you are extremely active then you will probably have to increase these amounts in order to ensure that your body is getting enough food to keep it fuelled.

5 Mistakes to Avoid When Trying to Lose Weight

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

Some people are so desperate to lose weight that they cling on to every piece of information they know which they believe can help them reach their goals.  Some weight loss fanatics are so into their weight loss program that they tend to give out ineffective advice that actually sabotages a person’s weight loss efforts.  Here are five of the most common mistakes dieters tend to make when trying to lose weight.

Skipping Breakfast
Don’t we all want to start the day feeling like we have achieving something?  Well, you can satisfy this by starting an early morning exercise program or a meditation ritual.  But do not ever make the mistake of skipping breakfast.  This is a big mistake and may cost you your success in achieving your weight loss goals.

Starvation Diet
No, sorry.  This one is not going to work either.  You do not want to starve yourself as your body will go into an emergency state that causes your metabolism to go haywire.  When it thinks that you are starving it, it will try to protect itself from the perceived possible future famine.  The body will cling desperately to all storage of fat and learn to adapt to the condition by burning less fat.  This is exactly what every weight loss experts dread.  In this state, you will lose very little weight, even when you are eating less and less food during the day.

Binging Diet Foods
Some weight loss companies do provide diet food that claim to have lower amounts of sugar and fat.  They are specially prepared to help you lose weight.  Or so are they?  Even if these prepare diet food come with lower fat and sugar, it won’t do you any food if you binge on them.  For instance, if the usual burger comes with 50 grams of fat, and your new ”diet” food comes with only half of that amount, what good would it do if you are eating double of what you are supposed to?

So in the end you will be spending money on those expensive specially prepared meals and not getting the results you want.

Salad Meals
Who can live on salad alone?  Not me!  We all need a variety of healthy, delicious meal that we can enjoy day to day without feelings of deprivation and loss.  So it is far better for you to select a good well-balanced meal instead of opting for salad everyday, it will keep you on the program a whole lot longer.

Spend Money
You do not need to spend excessive amounts of money to lose weight.  Most people believe that some amount of investment has to be made to purchase all those fancy weight loss peripherals, but effective weight loss do not need financial investment all the time.  If you are keen to lose weight, you can always surf the Internet.  There are plenty of free programs you can try; with a little bit of determination it will help you lose the weight you want.

The Nutrisystem Diet

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

There are a lot of different diets that are available and one of the most common diets is the nutrisystem diet. The nutrisystem diet is one of the easiest and most flexible diets that are available and this diet is also very effective. One of he main reason why this diet is so successful is the fact that it takes a lot of guess work out of the process of dieting by educating people in ways to have a healthier lifestyle and ways to avoid the pre-packaged ready meals that are consumed in vast numbers ever day.

The nutrisystem diet is unique in the way that is works and it takes into account the individual persons circumstances, this looks at the person’s age, height, weight and the gender of the individual person in order to achieve a good weight loss. The nutrisystem diet is a low fat diet plan but at the same time it does not stop the body from getting the essential fat which the body requires and it also ensures that the body receives the required carbohydrates.

The carbohydrate requirements are based on the glycmic index and this ensures that there is a healthy intake of carbohydrates in the correct quantity whilst insuring that there is a lower fat intake, which will help with weight loss. A lot of people are able to see an instant reduction in their weight.

This weight loss program is actually fairly simple to follow and it does not require the person to count every single calorie that they consume and there is no need to schedule your meals in accordance with a plan. The type of dieting is very beneficial especially for people who have a busy lifestyle and are already having to multi task and juggle a large number of different things.

The nutrisystem is a balanced diet, which is calculated for each individual person taking into account a wide range of different things. This style of diet places an importance on ensuring that the body gets the correct nutrient whilst actually reducing the amount of fat. The nutrisystem diet believes that the diet should contain sixty per cent carbohydrates whilst avoiding carbohydrates that have a high level of fat content. This diet also believes that the diet should be made up of about twenty per cent protein and twenty per cent fats, whilst reducing the amount of fat that the body consumes it is also important to keep some fat in the diet.

Like all other diets this diet has both advantages and disadvantages. The disadvantages of this diet are that the person will need to make all their own meals which takes up a great deal of time and this can be a costly program to follow. This program is very expensive and for that reason there are a lot of people who may not be able to follow this diet plan however there are lot of people who prefer this diet because they not need to bother about preparing meals as they can sign up to the costly program and this cost also includes the meals that will be supplied. The advantages of this diet are that it teaches people ways in which to control their hunger and eat a balanced diet with the correct amount of nutrients.

What You Need to Know About the South Beach Diet

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

The South Beach Diet, with followers as iconic as Bill and Hilary Clinton has sparked the interest of dieters all over the world with a very public following and a mound of positive client testimonials.

Originally developed in 1999 by a Doctor called Dr. Agatson it was brought about not only to relieve the problems associated with weight gain by helping the users of the diet to lose weight, but it could also be used as a way to combat and even prevent certain heart conditions, or so it was claimed.

Similar to the Atkins diet in stature and nature, it works on the idea that certain carbohydrates are bad for you and causes you to lose weight so by eliminating some of the carbohydrate food group; the theory is that it will enable you to lose weight. Although not cutting out the carbohydrates in the diet completely, as this is considered to bring about more health problems than it does to lose weight, it focuses on carbohydrates that are considered to be good or bad in nature.

Good carbohydrates are wheat breads and foods that are high in fibre and the bad carbohydrates are those that raise blood sugar levels for a period of time and then cause them to drop at a sharp rate, leaving you bad tempered and irritable as well as hungry and devout of energy. Certain foods are included in this “bad carbohydrate” group and these consist of pasta and biscuits, cakes or sweets.

Alongside the good and bad carbohydrates, there is a system of good and bad fats. Bad fats are considered to be saturated fats and the good ones are generally those that are monounsaturated.

There is a basic diet pattern for the South Beach Diet as well as these foods, which you are and are not allowed to eat and the pattern is that the user will eat three balanced and healthy meals per day as well as eating on healthy snacks in between meals. These snacks are designed for users of the South Beach Diet to be able to keep their blood sugar levels up and therefore not feeling hunger pangs between meals.

Alongside the designated foods and daily eating routines, the South Beach Diet also incorporates a weekly regime and again this is consistent with that of the Atkins Diet. The first two weeks of the South Beach Diet consists of almost completely eliminating carbohydrate rich foods altogether in a rather strict diet plan. It has been reported that the expected weight loss during this initial starting phase of the diet could be anything between eight and thirteen pounds which will bring you on to week two of the South Beach Diet where you slowly introduce the good carbohydrates back into your diet until you reach the desired weight that you have set out. This phase will continue for however many weeks that it takes for you to reach the weight that you want to achieve.

The final phase of the South Beach Diet is where your life will return back to some sort of normality. Again, good and bad carbohydrates will still be the main idea and you should try to achieve this when you take yourself off the diet but a healthy and more balanced meal plan should be adopted.
